The city of Phoenix Water Services Department consistently provides a reliable supply of drinking water that meets or surpasses all standards for health and safety at a lower cost than most southwest cities. More than 90 percent of the water delivered to our customers comes from surface water sources such as lakes, rivers and streams. The remaining water delivered to our customers comes from groundwater or wells. The surface water is treated at one of six water treatment plants.
After customers use the water, we then collect and treat it at one of the city’s three wastewater treatment plants in such a manner that it meets all
applicable standards which protect the environment. Most of the water is recycled or reclaimed and used for agricultural irrigation, industry or to water
large turf areas such as golf courses.
The Water Services Department is comprised of approximately 1400 employees including engineers, technicians, field service representatives and office
staff. The employees provide services to customers within a 540-square mile service area.
As a government agency. the city of Phoenix Water Services Department is fee-driven and thereby self-supporting.
